180 Adamawa Christians to Embark on Pilgrimage

The Adamawa State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board has flagged off the 2024 pilgrimage for 180 Batch A Christian pilgrims travelling to Jordan and Israel. This spiritual journey includes a three-day visit to Jordan and six days in Israel, offering participants a chance to deepen their faith and explore the roots of their beliefs.

The pilgrimage commenced on Friday with an orientation and farewell service at the E.Y.N. Church, State Low Cost, Jimeta-Yola. Initially scheduled for 2023, it was postponed due to the Gaza conflict.

Addressing the pilgrims, Deputy Governor Professor Kaletapwa Farauta urged them to respectfully represent Adamawa State and Nigeria. She emphasised the spiritual significance of the journey, encouraging participants to use the experience to strengthen their faith and pray for Nigeria.

“The pilgrimage is not just a physical journey but a spiritual exercise to strengthen your faith and understanding of the Holy Scriptures. I urge you to avoid destructive behaviours such as absconding or involvement in illicit activities,” Farauta stated.

Geoffrey Garba, Executive Secretary of the Pilgrims Welfare Board, noted that preparations for the pilgrimage had been ongoing for over a year. He acknowledged the rising travel costs, which have surged from ₦3 million to nearly ₦6 million per pilgrim due to higher tariffs. However, federal government subsidies for Christian and Muslim pilgrimages have made the trip more affordable.

Garba highlighted the transformative potential of the pilgrimage: “Pilgrims are going to experience firsthand the places they have read about in the Bible. This will not only boost their faith but also influence how they live and share the message of Christ with others.”

Intelligence measures have been implemented to screen participants to prevent absconding. Additionally, the Deputy Governor encouraged private sponsorships to expand access to the Holy Land experience while reiterating the government’s support for pilgrimages for both Christians and Muslims in Adamawa State.

The pilgrims departed on Friday night, carrying with them the hopes and prayers of their community. During their time in the Holy Land, they were encouraged to intercede for Nigeria’s peace, stability, and prosperity.
