Kallakuruchi’s Tragic Night: Toxic Alcohol Kills 34, Hospitalizes 80
At least 34 people have died in Tamil Nadu after consuming toxic bootleg alcohol. The incident occurred in the Kallakuruchi district, where several residents fell ill after consuming the liquor. Tragically, approximately 80 people have been hospitalised, showing symptoms such as dizziness, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, headaches, eye irritation, and excessive diarrhoea. Unfortunately, the death toll may increase.
Government’s response
Authorities have taken swift action in response to this crisis. Also, two people have been arrested, and an investigation is underway. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has stated that actions will be taken against negligent officials and that the perpetrators of the crime will be brought to justice. In addition, a senior police officer and ten members of the state’s prohibition enforcement team have been suspended for negligence of duty.
Bootleg alcohol continues to be a pervasive issue in India, with dozens of people dying annually from ingesting poisonous substances added to illicit alcohol. Bootleggers often add methanol to increase the alcohol’s potency, which can lead to severe reactions and tragic outcomes.
In addition, to support the affected families, Chief Minister Stalin has announced compensation of one million rupees ($12,000) for the families of the deceased and 50,000 rupees for those who are hospitalised. However, opposition parties have criticised the government for failing to curb the distribution of toxic alcohol in the state.

This incident underscores the persistent problem of illicit alcohol in India, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement and better preventive measures. The government’s immediate response, including arrests and suspensions, aims to address the issue. Nonetheless, ongoing political and public pressure indicates that more systemic changes might be necessary to prevent future occurrences.
