Dunsin Oyekan on Worship: “More than Just Music”

“Music to me is not a career,” says Dunsin Oyekan, a prominent voice in contemporary gospel music. In his recent interview with pastor Shola Okodugha and Dr. Kay Ijisesan, Oyekan delved deep into the spiritual essence of worship, sharing how believers can transform their worship from routine to a life-changing encounter with God.

Dunsin Oyekan started the interview by speaking on how this generation of Christians has made worship transactional. Dunsin said most Christians only see worship through the lens of affliction, and the transactional nature of that relationship has limited what the body of Christ can enjoy. He elaborated that worship must be based on a relationship with God.

According to Dunsin, we are beings created to have a relationship with God, and out of that relationship, worship comes. “I think the composition of man is centred on worship,” he said. He further added that worship cannot be patterned. He also cautioned Christians of the errors they make when they worship God only in times of affliction.

When he was asked how he was able to pick up his guitar and still worship God when his wife died, he said worship is not a formula out of pain for him but rather a lifestyle. At that period when his wife died, he wasn’t worshipping to get rid of pain; rather, it was his natural response to all things, either good or bad. He said, “To me, worshipping is never out of necessity.” He added that it is through worship that God could reveal himself.

Speaking on his music career, he said he never wanted to sing or become a music director. He was more interested in drumming because he played the bass as part of a choir. Growing up in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, he was always juggling school and church. He said going around playing the drums in a band and listening to Sunday school lectures influenced him. Even after being influenced, he still didn’t want to sing; instead, he wanted to start a music business and sponsor other artists.

Dunsin said music to him is not a career “because God created all things for his pleasure.” He added that worship cannot be separated from music, and music is one of the greatest ways to express worship. Dunsin further said he got the inspiration for his UPPER ROOM concerts in a revelation from God.

The talented artist mentioned that he finds inspiration for his songs from God, even though he doesn’t seek divine intervention for songwriting. He also revealed that he has already recorded his next two albums.
