FEC Closes Down Niger Delta, Sports Ministries

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has dissolved the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development as part of a significant restructuring effort aimed at streamlining government functions.

This decision was made during the ongoing Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the State House in Abuja, as announced by Bayo Ononuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, in a tweet from his verified X account, @aonanuga1956.

A new Ministry of Regional Development will be in charge of regional development commissions, such as the Niger Delta Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission, and North East Development Commission.

The National Sports Commission will take over the duties of the now-dissolved Ministry of Sports Development.

In another key merger, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the consolidation of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy.

This rearrangement is part of President Tinubu’s initiative to reorganise the government for improved efficiency and performance.

The Niger Delta Ministry was reportedly dissolved due to overlapping responsibilities with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The NDDC will continue its mission of promoting rapid and sustainable development in the Niger Delta region.

Onanuga stated, “President Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council scrap the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development. There will now be a ministry of regional development to oversee all the regional development commissions, such as the Niger Delta Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission, and North East Development Commission.

“The National Sports Commission will take over the role of the Ministry of Sports.

“The FEC also approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy.

The decisions were made today at the meeting of the federal executive council in Abuja.
