Abia Police Command Disbands Special Unit for Misconduct
The Abia State Police Command has disbanded its Anti-Cultism Unit due to unprofessional behaviour by its officers. In a statement released on Tuesday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, explained that the decision was part of the force’s effort to uphold professionalism and maintain public trust and to stop the anti-cultism unit from deviating from the main purpose and reason it was initially created.
The statement also announced disciplinary action against an officer. Corporal Okonkwo Ebuka, who was serving in the Aba Area Command and on special duty at Isuochi, has been demoted to the rank of Constable. ASP Chinaka revealed, “The demotion followed an administrative action where he was tried in an orderly room and found guilty of discreditable conduct, unprofessional behaviour, and incivility towards the public.”
This action was to set a clear example to anyone who has it in mind to break the rules or express unprofessionalism any further and also to remind the public that the actions of officers are being noticed, observed, and in check to aid a professional and uncorrupted force.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, reiterated the force’s zero-tolerance policy for misconduct among officers, emphasising the commitment to building a professional, service-orientated, and people-friendly police force. The commissioner’s actions align with the vision of the Inspector General of Police to ensure that the police operate within the principles of the rule of law and public service.
The statement highlighted the police command’s dedication to safeguarding its reputation while promoting accountability among its personnel.
