FG Increases Inmates Feeding Allowance To ₦1,125

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved an increase in the daily feeding allowance for inmates in correctional facilities, raising it from ₦750 to ₦1125 per person. This development was announced by the Acting Controller General of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS), Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, during his inaugural meeting with senior officers at the rank of controllers of prisons.

Nwakuche explained that the increment, authorised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, acknowledges the rising cost of living. However, he noted that while this increase is a step forward, it does not fully address the extensive challenges faced by the correctional system. He pledged continued advocacy for enhanced funding to improve inmate welfare.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) is responsible for the lawful custody of offenders, presenting them in court as required, and rehabilitating them for reintegration into society as responsible citizens. To support this mandate, the service operates prison farms and industries, contributing both to reform initiatives and government revenue.

Despite its critical mandate, the correctional system grapples with severe issues, including:

  • Overcrowding: As of January 6, 2025, 48,932 inmates—a significant portion of the total prison population—are awaiting trial.
  • Poor Sanitation and Healthcare: Inadequate facilities hinder rehabilitation and pose risks to the physical and mental well-being of inmates.
  • Feeding Constraints: Previously, less than ₦500 of the ₦750 allowance was allocated for actual feeding after deductions for taxes, fuel costs, and vendor profits.

To address these issues, monitoring teams from the national headquarters have been deployed to inspect feeding conditions and ensure effective use of the increased funds. Senior officers have been instructed to collaborate with these teams, emphasising that improving inmate welfare is a national responsibility.

Nwakuche stressed the importance of prioritising the welfare of vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, nursing mothers, and individuals with disabilities. Plans are underway to expand educational opportunities and vocational training programs within correctional facilities. The administration also aims to partner with private organisations to sustain these initiatives.
