Gospel Singer Kills Corp Member Girlfriend in Nasarawa

The arrest of gospel singer Timilehin Ajayi for the alleged murder and dismemberment of 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member Salome Enejo has left the Orozo community and beyond in shock. The heinous crime, suspected to have ritualistic motives, has drawn widespread condemnation and demands for justice.

According to the Nasarawa State Police Command, Ajayi was apprehended on Sunday after suspicious behaviour was reported near a church in Orozo on the Abuja-Nasarawa border. Police spokesperson Ramhan Nansel revealed that Ajayi was carrying a bag containing the severed head of the victim when he was confronted by churchgoers.

Church officials, including Caleb Umaru, General Secretary and Bible Study Teacher, recounted how Ajayi’s actions near a river aroused suspicion. A church member, Brother Victor, noticed Ajayi acting nervously with a bag, which he later discarded into the river. When confronted, Ajayi denied throwing anything into the water, but his demeanour raised alarms.

Victor, along with other church members and a motorcyclist who had earlier transported Ajayi, pursued him when he tried to flee. They apprehended him on farmland and turned him over to the police.

Police investigations led to the gruesome discovery of two sacks containing dismembered body parts at Ajayi’s residence. The remains were identified as those of Salome Enejo, who had been serving as a corps member in Abuja. Her family has since been informed.

Nansel noted that the suspect was rescued from an angry mob before being taken into custody. Ajayi is currently under medical care due to injuries sustained during his capture.

This chilling incident draws parallels to a similar case in October 2023, when the Lagos State Police declared Benjamin Nnanyereugo, also known as KillaBoi, wanted for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Augusta Osedion. Such cases underscore the growing concern over violent crimes against women and ritual-related killings in Nigeria.

Outrage has erupted across the nation, with calls for justice for Salome Enejo and stricter measures to combat such atrocities. Advocacy groups are urging the government and law enforcement agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and speedy prosecution of the suspect.

The Nasarawa State Police Command has assured the public of their commitment to investigating the matter comprehensively. Meanwhile, community leaders and rights activists emphasise the need for awareness and preventive measures to address the underlying causes of such crimes.

Salome Enejo’s tragic death serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need to tackle gender-based violence and protect vulnerable individuals across Nigeria.
