Devastating Lokoja Road Accident Leaves Six Dead, 60 Injured
A tragic road accident in Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State, claimed the lives of six individuals and left 60 others injured on Tuesday. The devastating incident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. near the Zone 8 Roundabout along Hassan Katsina Road.
According to reports, a truck travelling from Bauchi to Enugu State lost control, resulting in a catastrophic collision. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) State Sector Commander, Samuel Oyedeji, confirmed that the deceased’s remains have been deposited at the Federal University Teaching Hospital mortuary.
Eyewitnesses described harrowing scenes as rescue teams worked tirelessly to manage the aftermath. “It was a terrifying sight,” said a resident who preferred to remain anonymous. “People were trapped in the wreckage, and it took hours to clear the site.” Emergency responders, including the FRSC and local volunteers, faced significant challenges in extracting victims from the wreckage and clearing the road.
Commander Oyedeji expressed deep concern over the incident and emphasized the importance of road safety. He urged drivers, especially those operating heavy-duty vehicles, to prioritize safety and exercise caution. He also called on relevant authorities to address ongoing challenges with road infrastructure and strengthen the enforcement of traffic regulations. “This unfortunate incident reminds us all of the need for shared responsibility in ensuring safer roads,” he stated.
This tragic event echoes another accident in Kogi State earlier this year. On April 1, 2024, a collision involving a commercial Sharon bus and a cement truck claimed 13 lives and injured two others. The accident occurred near Obajana Market on the Obajana-Lokoja Road.
Commander Oyedeji explained that the Sharon bus had stopped behind a parked truck to allow passengers to make purchases when a cement truck, suffering brake failure, rammed into it. The aftermath left both passengers and passersby in shock.

The recurring nature of these accidents underscores the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures across Nigeria’s highways. Stakeholders, including the government, transport unions, and private organizations, must collaborate to improve road conditions, enforce stricter traffic regulations, and educate drivers on best practices to prevent further tragedies.
