49 MAPOLY Students Face Expulsion Over Fake ND Results

A total of 49 final-year Higher National Diploma (HND) students at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) are at risk of expulsion after a result verification process uncovered the use of fake National Diploma (ND) certificates.

Learnt on Thursday that the affected students had allegedly submitted counterfeit ND results when seeking admission into various HND programs at the polytechnic. These students are enrolled in departments such as Mass Communication, Pharmaceutical Technology, Marketing, Science Laboratory Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Accountancy, among others.

The fake results reportedly came from several institutions, including The Polytechnic, Ibadan; The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro; Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa; and Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa, in Oyo State.

In a related development, the institution announced the indefinite closure of MAPOLY on Monday, following a planned protest by the affected students.

Speaking with our correspondent on Thursday, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Yemi Ajibola, explained that the verification process was part of the polytechnic’s efforts to authenticate documents submitted by students upon admission. He confirmed that the delay in result releases was due to the ongoing verification process. After thorough checks, it was found that some students had submitted fake ND results.

“We have our internal mechanisms for verifying results submitted by every student of the polytechnic. Some of the results had yet to be verified because the schools they came from had yet to confirm their results, while some of the results were found to be fake,” Ajibola said. He further noted that the verification process had been delayed due to administrative issues but assured that the school was working to resolve them.

Ajibola also clarified that the affected students would not face immediate expulsion. Instead, they would be given an opportunity to defend their results before any final decision is made. “They will not be expelled immediately. The institution will write to each of the affected students to come and defend the result they presented, and in a circumstance where we detect an error in the verification process, we will rectify it. However, anyone who could not substantiate his/her results will be expelled,” he added.

In another development, tensions between the Ogun State Government and the students escalated following an alleged confrontation between protesting students and the state’s Deputy Governor, Mrs. Noimot Salako-Oyedele. While the government claimed the deputy governor narrowly escaped an attack by the students, the students have alleged that security personnel attached to the deputy governor fired shots at them during the altercation.
