Three Israelis Released After 471 days in Hamas Captivity
On January 19, 2025, three Israelis held hostage by Hamas for 471 days were released and returned home, marking a significant development in ongoing tensions between Israel and Hamas. The hostages—Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher, and Emily Damari—crossed into Israel shortly before 6 p.m. local time, sparking celebrations across the country, particularly at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv, where families and supporters gathered to witness the moment.
The release was part of a broader ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, which involves the release of 33 hostages. Delays occurred in the process, as Hamas transmitted the names of the hostages later than expected, but the ceasefire commenced earlier in the day. Preparations for the release saw large crowds gathering in Gaza City, including heavily armed Hamas militants, as the hostages were transferred to Red Cross vehicles for transport to an Israel Defence Forces (IDF) post within Gaza.
The transfer followed a process similar to a prior ceasefire arrangement, during which hostages were moved to Egypt via the Rafah border crossing. Upon reaching the Israeli border, the hostages were received by IDF and Shin Bet personnel and escorted to safety. The IDF later released video footage capturing emotional reunions between the hostages and their families, showcasing scenes of relief and joy.
Among the hostages, Emily Damari, who sustained severe injuries during her initial capture, was reunited with her mother. Damari’s injuries included the loss of two fingers, a stark reminder of the ordeal she endured. Her family expressed gratitude for the support they received throughout her captivity and requested privacy during their period of recovery. Emily’s mother also called for continued efforts to secure the release of all remaining hostages.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu both issued statements celebrating the hostages’ return. Herzog described the moment as one of national relief and unity, while Netanyahu emphasised the sacrifices made by Israeli forces to bring the hostages home, stating they had “emerged from darkness into light.”
The return of Gonen, Steinbrecher, and Damari highlights the plight of those still in captivity. Damari’s family, along with other advocates, has urged the international community to continue pressing for the release of all hostages. Humanitarian concerns remain paramount, with families calling for increased efforts to resolve the situation.
The released hostages are receiving medical and psychological care at Safra Children’s Hospital in central Israel as they begin their recovery. The nation remains hopeful for the safe return of the remaining captives, maintaining a spirit of resilience and solidarity amidst ongoing challenges.
