Man With HIV Rapes Teen with Sickle Cell In Abuja
A 34-year-old man, Ugan, from Ogoja in Cross River State, was arrested by the police for allegedly raping a young girl, Ngozi, in Abuja.
Ugan had lured Ngozi into a room and raped her. He then locked her up in the room to prevent her from leaving and went to buy medicine to stop her bleeding.
Ngozi was in Abuja to register at a secondary school when the incident happened. She had just arrived from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where she was staying with her aunt.
Ugan had reportedly approached Ngozi for a date, but she rejected him because she is a young girl.
This incident occurred On January 6, 2025, Ugan visited his friend Isaac, who lived in an uncompleted building. The 17-year-old girl who lived in the same compound was asked by Ugan to buy him water. He then dragged her into the house and raped her, causing her to bleed heavily. Ngozi’s mother noticed her condition and raised the alarm.
The mob caught Ugan as he was trying to escape, beating him severely.
The CP, Olatunji Dusu, ordered the divisional police officer in charge of the Mabushi division to intervene in the incident.
The mother and Ngozi were also present at the police station for interrogation but she passed out and was rushed to Maitama General Hospital, where she had to undergo surgery to stop the bleeding.
Ugan was also taken for a medical checkup in a hospital by the investigating police officer, which showed that he is HIV positive.
Ugan’s brother recounted to the police that he had once advised Ugan to go for a medical checkup when he noticed he was looking too lean but Ugan later denied knowing he had HIV, claiming he had earlier gone for medical tests.
During an interview, Ugan revealed that he actually works as a front desk officer in an eatery while claiming he is in a relationship with Ngozi. Also, when questioned how he got a condom he used on the girl when he only went there to cook, he explained that he found it in his friend’s room. He further denied knowing the girl was a virgin and sickle cell person.
He disclosed the whole incident, saying, “She (Ngozi) was my girlfriend. I approached her for dating and she accepted. I started the relationship with her over two weeks before the incident. On January 6, I went to my friend’s house to cook and she came to visit me when she saw me. My friend lives in the same premises with her parents.
“She ate with me and we were playing. While we were together, I asked her if we could make love, and she said yes. It was between 11 am and 12 noon. I brought out my condom and had sex with her. That was when I discovered that she was a virgin, and she started bleeding.”
He continued: “After the sex, she started bleeding. I asked her why she didn’t tell me that she was a virgin. I stepped out to get her some medications, but she told me to lock the door when going as she was scared and would not want anyone to come in. I told her it would be bad if I locked her in but she said it did not matter.

“So, I locked the door and went to get some medications like Flagyl, Buscopan, and Diclofenac. I bought malt drink and she took the medicines. I bought another food for her. She washed up and stood up, saying that she was going.
“After she left, I went to my own residence. I tried to explain to my cousin what happened and he told me that we would need to go to her parents’ house to explain things and offer to take care of her if there’s need for proper treatment.
“We were about to go when I saw people, four security men, the girl’s mother and her siblings. I was taken to the police station and detained. The following day, I was brought out and taken for a test.”
“It was a little bit hard but the condom I used was oily and I didn’t really feel the obstacle. It was when I withdrew that I saw it was that much.”
“I didn’t see her cry before I penetrated her, but she was very stiff and squeezing her face and hands.”
News correspondence, Nigerian Tribune, revealed that when he was questioned how he knew the right drugs to get for her, he stated that a chemist had prescribed it for him and also added that he never knew he was HIV positive until this day.
He said, “I thought her looks were natural; I didn’t know she had sickle cell disease. Also, I didn’t know I was HIV positive. The police took me to the hospital for tests and when the results were out, I was told that I was HIV-positive. Honestly, I didn’t know I had it in my system. I used a condom because I didn’t want to get her pregnant. I was not also ready to start a family as I don’t have the capacity for it now”.
Ugan remains in police custody awaiting his court appearance.
