Governor Alia Locks Out Late Civil Servants in Benue

In a decisive move that underscores the need for accountability in public service, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia took an unexpected action on Wednesday by locking out hundreds of civil servants for arriving late to work. During an unannounced visit to the state secretariat at about 10:35 am, the governor found the premises largely empty, with only a few workers present.

Governor Alia’s visit was initially to inspect the ongoing renovation works at the secretariat, including the installation of new lighting and enhanced security systems. However, his arrival revealed a glaring issue: a lack of punctuality and commitment among the state’s civil servants. Acting promptly, the security personnel accompanying the governor shut the gates of the secretariat, effectively locking out tardy workers.

As the governor toured various ministries, he noted the absence of several commissioners and senior officials. This observation prompted him to voice his discontent publicly, addressing the crowd of workers who had been locked out at the gate.

Speaking directly to the gathered civil servants, Governor Alia did not mince words about the implications of their actions. He expressed concern over their lackadaisical attitude toward their responsibilities and emphasised the broader consequences of such behaviour.

“With what you are doing, you are creating a vicious circle for your families,” the governor said, highlighting how negligence at work ultimately affects personal and collective progress. He further reminded the workers that their duties are not just for their benefit but for the citizens they serve.

As a former priest, Governor Alia used his moral authority to emphasise the gravity of their conduct, warning that persistent indiscipline could lead to dire outcomes, including job termination. “I have a quick way of getting your names and firing you, as I have the power to do so,” he stated.

The governor’s address extended beyond reprimanding the late workers. He used the opportunity to stress the importance of discipline and adherence to rules in governance, likening the structure of government to that of a family, where rules and responsibilities ensure order and progress.

“It is not about me; who is government? All of you here are the government,” Governor Alia reminded them, emphasizing that every individual has a role to play in the success of the administration.

Governor Alia’s bold step serves as a wake-up call for civil servants in Benue State. It highlights the pressing need for a cultural shift in public service, where punctuality and accountability are non-negotiable. This action also underscores the governor’s commitment to improving the efficiency of governance and ensuring that public servants meet the expectations of those they are meant to serve.

Governor Hyacinth Alia’s decision to lock out late-coming civil servants sends a strong message about the importance of discipline and accountability in public service. It is a reminder that every individual in government has a critical role in driving societal progress. As Benue State moves forward, this incident may mark the beginning of a more committed and productive civil service.
