The Life of Oba Akinyele of Ibadan: God’s chosen Monarch
Oba Akinyele of Ibadan was a prominent traditional ruler and the first president of the Christ Apostolic Church, whose reign marked a pivotal era in the city’s history. Born into a family of Christian converts, Oba Akinyele excelled academically and worked as a civil servant before becoming the Olubadan (a non-hereditary traditional ruler) of Ibadan on February 17, 1955. He was the first educated Olubadan and the second Christian to ascend the throne, and his coronation was steeped in Yoruba and Christian practices.
During his reign, Oba Akinyele significantly improved Ibadan’s governance and infrastructure, modernizing markets, roads, and public spaces, advocating for school establishment and literacy, and supporting both traditional and modern healthcare practices to improve public health. He adeptly navigated the complex relationship between Ibadan and the British colonial authorities, serving as a mediator and safeguarding the interests of his people while fostering mutual understanding with the colonial government. Death
