Beatrice Ekweremadu celebrated as she returns to Enugu
The Mpu community in the Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State was filled with jubilation on Wednesday following the return of Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of the former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, from a United Kingdom prison. Sources confirmed that she returned to Nigeria on Tuesday, bringing a sense of relief to the community.
Mrs. Ekweremadu, alongside her husband and a medical doctor, Dr. Obinna Obeta, was convicted in May 2023 by a UK court for their involvement in an organ trafficking plot. The case revolved around an attempt to harvest the kidney of a 21-year-old street trader from Lagos, intended for their daughter Sonia, who was battling a kidney ailment. However, the young man escaped in the UK and reported the incident to the police, leading to arrests, trials, and eventual convictions.
The UK court sentenced Senator Ekweremadu to nine years and eight months in prison, Mrs. Ekweremadu to four years and six months, and Dr. Obeta to 10 years. Dr. Obeta’s medical license was also suspended.
The President of the Mpu Town Union Federated, Mr. Benjamin Chijioke, described Mrs. Ekweremadu’s return as a moment of immense relief and joy for the community. “Our joy as Mpu people knows no bounds. This is a great day for us. Since morning, it has been jubilation and celebration across all the villages,” he said.
Chijioke highlighted the community’s gratitude, emphasizing how the Ekweremadu family’s philanthropic efforts had positively impacted countless lives. The celebrations coincided with Orie Market Day, which transformed the marketplace into a centre of festivity. “We thank God and pray that He intervenes so that our illustrious son and leader, distinguished Senator Ike Ekweremadu, will soon return home in good health,” Chijioke added.
The community expressed hope that Senator Ekweremadu would eventually rejoin them, stating that his absence had left a significant gap in local leadership and development.

The people of Mpu continue to demonstrate unwavering support for their leaders, firmly believing in their contributions and leadership.
