House Of David: Epic Biblical Drama Premieres On Prime Video

Bringing the story of King David to the screen is no small feat, but filmmakers Jon Erwin and Jon Gunn have taken on the challenge with their latest project, House of David. This highly anticipated biblical drama is set to premiere on Prime Video, with the first three episodes available on February 27.

Erwin and Gunn, known for their previous faith-based hits like I Can Only Imagine, The Case for Christ, and Jesus Revolution, saw House of David as the culmination of years of experience in storytelling. Erwin explained that adapting David’s life required more than just a single movie—it needed the depth and scale of a series. “The life of David is an odyssey,” he noted, emphasizing the vast and layered nature of the biblical account. Gunn added that this marks their first venture into television, a leap they took with a strong commitment to authenticity and humanity.

The series follows David’s rise from a humble shepherd to Israel’s most revered king, contrasting it with the downfall of King Saul. Starring Michael Iskander as David, Ali Suliman as Saul, and Stephen Lang as the prophet Samuel, the show brings a dynamic and deeply human portrayal of these legendary figures. Viewers will witness David’s journey through love, loss, and political intrigue, capturing the challenges and triumphs that defined his rule.

One of the creators’ primary goals was to ensure historical and biblical accuracy while making the story accessible to contemporary audiences. To achieve this, they collaborated with historians, biblical scholars, and rabbinic consultants. Dallas Jenkins, the creator of The Chosen, also contributed his expertise to the project. Gunn emphasised the importance of weaving the details of the Bronze Age into the show to make it feel authentic and engaging.

Small but significant touches, such as portraying Samuel’s hair by Nazarite customs, highlight the dedication to accuracy. Erwin and Gunn wanted to present a version of David’s story that remains faithful to scripture while bringing it to life in a new and compelling way.

Filming House of David in Greece allowed the production to achieve a grand, cinematic quality. Amazon’s support made this scale possible, with Erwin describing it as a “miracle” that such a massive platform backed a biblical drama. He credited the success of recent faith-based projects, like The Chosen and Jesus Revolution, for opening doors to larger productions of this nature.

While David’s battle with Goliath is one of the most well-known stories in the Bible, House of David explores the lesser-known moments that shaped his journey. Erwin noted that even those familiar with the scriptures would find surprises in the storytelling. The series brings to life the complexities of David’s relationships, his struggles with leadership, and his path to fulfilling his divine calling.

Despite its biblical origins, House of David aims to reach a wide audience, including those who may not typically watch faith-based content. Gunn highlighted that the show delivers a cinematic experience that can stand on its own. “For believers, we’ve honoured the sacred material, but for those unfamiliar with the Bible, the story itself is compelling,” he said.

Erwin likened David’s journey to classic hero tales like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, emphasising its universal themes of destiny, resilience, and overcoming adversity.

With faith-based storytelling gaining momentum, House of David is poised to be a landmark production. The series aims to spark curiosity, conversations, and a renewed appreciation for biblical narratives.

The first three episodes debut on February 27, and audiences can look forward to a weekly release schedule leading up to the finale on April 3. Produced by Wonder Project, Amazon MGM Studios, Nomadic Pictures, Argonauts, Kingdom Story Company, and Lionsgate Television, House of David is set to leave a lasting impact on biblical drama enthusiasts and new viewers alike.
