Ridiculous! Cynthia Erivo To Play Jesus At Hollywood Bowl
Cynthia Erivo has been cast as Jesus in the upcoming production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl.
The casting has sparked criticism from religious bodies and Christians worldwide. Critics argue that Jesus was historically male, with some accusing Hollywood of selectively reinterpreting Christian religious figures, especially Jesus Christ. “Noticed how Hollywood NEVER mocks other religions. Think about that,” one person wrote. Others expressed religious objections, quoting scripture and warning against altering biblical depictions.
The show reimagines the final days of Jesus Christ through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. Directed and choreographed by Colombian-American Sergio Trujillo, with Stephen Oremus as musical director and conductor, the production promises a fresh take on the classic.
From a Christian perspective, the decision to cast a woman as Jesus is deeply problematic. Jesus Christ was a man, and his portrayal should remain consistent with biblical teachings. Throughout history, Christian doctrine has emphasised the importance of Jesus’ identity as a man, as it plays a crucial role in theological beliefs about his role as the Son of God and the Messiah.

The Bible provides a clear depiction of Jesus as a male figure, and changing this fundamental aspect for the sake of modern inclusivity raises questions about artistic interpretation versus religious integrity. The significance of Jesus being born as a man is deeply rooted in scriptural prophecy and the divine plan for salvation. Altering this image for entertainment purposes can be seen as a move away from biblical truth, sparking concerns about whether such adaptations dilute the sacredness of Christian teachings.

This deviation from scripture is not a Christ-like action and should not be supported by faithful Christians who hold firm to traditional values and beliefs. Instead, it is important to stand for accurate biblical representation and to ensure that the core tenets of Christianity remain respected in artistic portrayals. While Jesus Christ Superstar is a widely loved musical, it is imperative to question whether such a casting decision aligns with the reverence and authenticity that Jesus Christ deserves.
Cynthia Erivo’s casting as Jesus Christ is the latest global case of blasphemy following the opening ceremony drag performance at the 2024 Olympic Games in France, in which drag queens and dancers were arranged in a tableau that some interpreted as resembling Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” Several religious groups and conservative leaders attacked this representation for purportedly ridiculing Christianity. In reaction, the organisers maintained that the scenario was meant to honour French art and design, not to mock religious themes. (en.wikipedia.org)
Cynthia Erivo herself isn’t an actress who is often associated with Christianity because of her lifestyle, which makes the choice of her casting more controversial.
The Hollywood Bowl’s 2025 summer season will begin in June 2025, with “Jesus Christ Superstar” scheduled to run from August 1 to August 3, 2025.
