Missionary Charged With Her Husband’s Murder In Angola

A Minnesota woman, Jackie Shroyer, has been formally charged in connection with the murder of her husband, Beau Shroyer, while on a Christian missionary trip in Angola. The case, which has drawn international attention, involves allegations of a murder-for-hire plot, with authorities in Angola linking Shroyer to a scheme that resulted in her husband’s tragic death.

Beau Shroyer, 44, from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, was found dead inside a vehicle in Thienjo, a town in southern Angola, on October 25, 2023. His wife, Jackie, was arrested in November after Angolan authorities launched an investigation into the murder. She has since been charged as a “co-author” in his death.

The couple had travelled to Angola on a Christian mission arranged by SIM USA. They brought along their five children, who ranged in age from 9 to 17. The family was affiliated with the Lakes Area Vineyard Church, which confirmed Jackie’s charges in a statement by lead pastor Troy M. Eason.

“It saddens me immensely to have to share with you that we were notified that Jackie has been formally charged as a co-author in the murder of her husband,” Eason said on the church’s website.

Previously, after Jackie’s arrest, Eason expressed disbelief, saying, “I’m so sorry. I simply do not have words to express my disbelief and sorrow about this news.”

Angolan authorities allege that Jackie Shroyer orchestrated a murder-for-hire scheme, promising to pay $50,000 to accomplices. Among those arrested were Bernadino Isaac Elisa, 24, a security guard for the couple, and Isalino Musselenga Kayoo, 23, also known as “Vin Diesel,” whom police identified as the mastermind behind the killing. Another suspect, Gelson Guerreiro Ramos, 22, remains at large.

According to the Angolan Criminal Investigation Service, Jackie allegedly had a romantic relationship with one of the accused, which may have been a motive for the crime. Police also noted that she had resisted leaving Angola at the end of her husband’s mission. A knife brought from the U.S. was found at the scene, along with 2.5 million kwanzas (approximately $5,000).

Jackie Shroyer remains in custody in Angola, where she is scheduled to stand trial within the next six months. She is represented by both Angolan and American attorneys. The U.S. government, including the FBI and the State Department, is aware of the case but has not publicly commented.

In an obituary shared by a local funeral home, Beau Shroyer was described as a compassionate man who dedicated his life to serving others. He worked as a student resource officer for the Detroit Lakes Police Department, where students affectionately called him “Officer Nice Guy.” His obituary also highlighted his deep commitment to missionary work, stating, “He became committed to finding ways that he, alongside his family, could serve the Lord by providing love, inspiration, and kindness as well as life’s necessities to the children and families in Africa.”

Meanwhile, the couple’s children have returned to the U.S. and are currently being cared for by SIM USA and the Lakes Area Vineyard Church.

Jackie Shroyer actively shared updates about her family’s missionary work in Angola on Instagram, with her last post appearing just four days before Beau’s murder. While her social media painted a picture of a devoted family on a faith-driven mission, investigators now believe there may have been hidden tensions that led to a deadly conspiracy.

As the case progresses, more details are expected to emerge about the motives and circumstances surrounding the tragic murder of Beau Shroyer. For now, his community in Minnesota and those who knew him in Angola continue to mourn his loss while awaiting justice.
