Larry Sanger, Wikipedia’s Co-Founder, Finds Faith In God
Larry Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia and a self-described sceptic for much of his life, recently announced his conversion to Christianity. His journey, which he admits was unexpected, is a story of deep intellectual exploration, philosophical reassessment, and personal transformation.
In a blog post titled “How a Sceptical Philosopher Becomes a Christian,” Sanger shared how he lost his childhood faith as a teenager, embracing methodological scepticism and a worldview that demands strong evidence before accepting any belief.
For years, this mindset shaped his understanding of religion, leading him to dismiss faith as unfounded. However, through a series of life experiences and intellectual enquiries, he found himself reconsidering his stance and ultimately embracing Christianity.
Sanger’s inquisitive nature was evident from a young age. He often challenged adults with difficult theological questions, eager to understand concepts like the difference between the mind, spirit, and soul.
However, the responses he received were often unsatisfactory. A particularly dismissive encounter with a pastor left a lasting impression, reinforcing his doubts about religious teachings.
By the time he reached his teenage years, Sanger had become convinced that a person’s worldview significantly influenced their life choices. Determined not to fall into blind belief, he systematically deconstructed his previous convictions. He decided to only adopt beliefs that he could logically and rationally defend, which led him to abandon his belief in God entirely.
“I essentially razed all of my beliefs to the ground,” Sanger recalled in an interview. “That’s what I told myself I was doing… and my belief in God went by the wayside at that time.”
His scepticism deepened during his graduate studies, solidifying his agnostic stance.
Sanger’s outlook began to change as he navigated significant milestones in his life. Marriage and fatherhood challenged his commitment to rational self-interest, a concept he had previously embraced. He realised that he would willingly sacrifice himself for his wife and child, an idea that directly conflicted with his earlier belief system.
“If I was willing to die for my wife and child, then I would be acting in their interest, not my own,” he reflected. “Then I thought, well, if I’m going to throw out that belief, what else was Ayn Rand wrong about?”
This realisation led him to question other deeply ingrained views, including his stance on God and religion. He also found himself increasingly defending Christians in debates, particularly against what he perceived as a growing hostility from atheists toward religious beliefs.

As his scepticism began to wane, Sanger developed an interest in the idea of a spiritual realm. His curiosity about the occult and metaphysical concepts eventually led him to read the Bible cover to cover in just 100 days.
To his surprise, the text withstood his critical analysis. Instead of finding contradictions and weak arguments, he discovered a rich tradition of theological thought that had been debated and refined for centuries.
“I discovered, to my shock and consternation, that it actually makes a lot more sense than I understood,” he admitted. “All the questions that I had asked before had been asked by others and answered in various ways. The fact that there is a 2000-year-old tradition of theology exists because the Bible withstands questioning.”
At the same time, he revisited classic philosophical arguments for the existence of God, such as the Argument from Causality, Contingency, and Design. As he studied these ideas, they began to fit together like pieces of a puzzle, strengthening his belief in a divine creator.
Eventually, Sanger took a leap of faith; he started praying and, in 2020, fully embraced Christianity. While the shift was surprising even to him, he felt an undeniable conviction that he had found truth.
Despite this life-changing decision, he chose to keep his faith private at first, wanting to ensure he could articulate and defend his beliefs before making them public. Now, years later, he is ready to share his journey with the world.
Larry Sanger’s transformation from a staunch sceptic to a believer highlights the power of intellectual curiosity, life experiences, and personal reflection. His story serves as a testament to the idea that faith and reason are not necessarily at odds but can coexist in the pursuit of truth.
