Christian Parents Sue Schools Over LGBTQ Books In Classrooms

Christian parents in the U.S. are arguing for the right to prevent their children from being exposed to LGBTQ-themed storybooks in public schools. The case, Mahmoud vs. Taylor, involves Muslim, Catholic, and Ukrainian Orthodox parents who claim they have faced religious discrimination. They argue that the books being introduced in schools contradict their religious beliefs.

Previously, the Montgomery County Board of Education allowed parents to opt their children out of 20 new inclusivity books intended for students from kindergarten through eighth grade. However, in 2023, that option was removed, meaning parents will no longer receive prior information about the book content.

The books cover topics such as pride parades, choosing pronouns, and gender transitions. The Manhattan Institute reports that one book asks three- and four-year-olds to search for images of words like “intersex flag,” “[drag] queen,” “underwear,” “leather,” and the name of an LGBTQ activist and sex worker.

The case is being represented by Becket Religious Liberty for All, with legal support from the Alliance Defending Freedom, which has submitted an amicus brief to the Supreme Court. The Court is set to hear the case this summer.

Senior Legal Counsel Vincent Wagner told Premier Christian News that he believes parents should have the right to decide what their children are taught.

“What’s at play here is old U.S. Supreme Court cases, which have said that it’s not appropriate for schools to be in the business of trying to standardize children’s beliefs,” Wagner said.

“Children that young being instructed in these things by a teacher, it’s really going to influence their beliefs… You can’t have a public program that’s structured in a way that excludes religious people from participating in the public program.”
