Singer Tope Alabi: “God Didn’t Tell Me Not To Wear Earrings”

Nigerian gospel singer Tope Alabi has spoken up about her recent Choice of fashion style, clarifying that her choices are personal and not divinely instructed. In a recent statement, Tope Alabi revealed that her decision to wear jewellery, wigs, and makeup was entirely her own, saying, “I love fashion, but then I do not have the money for it. God has not told me not to wear earrings, necklaces, or wigs. God did not direct the decision to cover my hair in church; it was my initiative.”

She further explained that her choice to cover her hair while ministering was deliberate. “It is intentional. I told myself I would cover my hair whenever I wanted to minister unless I was called to sing impromptu while wearing a wig. In that case, I would not cover my hair.”

Addressing concerns about her appearance in music videos, Alabi highlighted her background in theatre, stating that she tailors her looks to fit the message of each video. “I am a dramatic person. If you see me in any video without earrings, know I decided not to wear them, as the song’s meaning did not require it. I am a theatre practitioner, so I understand what fits each music video. I carefully choose my outfits to match the theme when I shoot my videos.”

She also addressed misconceptions about her previous fashion choices, explaining that her inability to afford certain accessories in the past contributed to her simpler style. “People did not see me wearing big earrings before, and they did not know it was because I could not afford them. I simply made do with what I had.”

Refuting claims that her new fashion sense signifies a shift towards worldliness, Alabi questioned the logic behind such criticisms. She pointed out that her choices are influenced by the themes of her songs. “Why would I wear earrings in a music video that portrays suffering? Do suffering people wear earrings? Back then, I could not afford those earrings.”

Reflecting on her journey, Alabi expressed gratitude for her progress, emphasizing that her success was gradual and achieved through God’s grace.

She also addressed rumours about her changing complexion, dismissing them as unfounded. “Now that God has favoured me and I can go to the market to buy the earrings I like, some people say I have become a worldly singer. They said I never wear earrings, but now I do. They even said my complexion had changed—that I was fair and that I was dark before. Are they my parents? Do they know that hardship can make someone lose their natural skin tone?”

Tope Alabi reaffirmed that her choices remain personal and do not alter her commitment to her faith and ministry.
