Church Attack: Delta Pastor Shot, Six Members Kidnapped

Gunmen attacked the Elyon Paradise Ministry Church in Asagba Ogwashi, Delta State, during a Friday night vigil, abducting six worshippers and leaving the pastor critically injured. Witnesses reported that the assailants forcefully entered the church, opening fire and targeting the presiding pastor, Apostle Divine Omodia. In a gruesome act of violence, they shot him and severed two of his fingers before fleeing with six members of the congregation to an unknown location.

As of Sunday, there had been no communication from the kidnappers regarding any ransom demand, increasing anxiety about the fate of the victims. A source familiar with the situation confirmed that neither family members nor authorities had received any calls from the abductors since the attack occurred.

Speaking on the incident, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, verified the report and assured the public that a rescue operation was already underway. Security personnel had been deployed to nearby forests in pursuit of the criminals to secure the safe return of the hostages.

This latest attack adds to the growing number of abductions of religious leaders and churchgoers in Nigeria. Since the beginning of 2025, more than 15 clergymen have been kidnapped, highlighting the increasing threats to places of worship. Kidnapping remains a major security crisis in the country, with no immediate solution in sight. Citizens continue to call on the government to implement stronger measures to curb these attacks and protect communities from such violent crimes.
