Churchgoers Kill Owl, Claim It Came To Steal Their Destinies
A dramatic scene unfolded in a church as Churchgoers captured and killed an owl, believing it to be a supernatural entity intent on stealing their destinies. The incident, which was recorded and shared online, sparked widespread debate across social media platforms.
In the viral video, the owl was roughly handled by the pastor while the congregation sang in fervour, repeatedly chanting, “God of Elijah, send down fire.” The presiding pastor reinforced their fears, declaring that the bird had come to loot and steal their destinies. The crowd erupted in religious chants, convinced that they had thwarted an evil force.
The video, posted on X (formerly Twitter), quickly gained traction, drawing diverse reactions from viewers. Some supported the churchgoers, citing spiritual beliefs that associate owls with bad omens. One user commented, “Even Google will tell you that seeing an owl isn’t a good omen. You can still ask Grok for confirmation.” Others strongly criticised the act, labelling it as superstition-fuelled paranoia.
Another comment read, “Disbelievers of God will go to any extent; this is just disturbing.” However, not everyone shared this view. A different user remarked, “Africans believing that everything placed in this world is out to destroy them just tells you a lot about us as a people. We are too lazy to build ourselves.”
Others cited personal experiences to justify their belief in supernatural forces. One comment stated, “More like due to my past experience, I believe that witch turned into that thing. The circumstance was too glaring. This is not a matter of superstition.”

The incident has fuelled discussions on the role of religion and superstition in Nigerian society. Some argue that such beliefs are deeply rooted in cultural traditions and should not be dismissed outright. Others believe that such actions highlight the dangers of misinformation and religious extremism.
While owls are often associated with mystery and folklore in various cultures, wildlife experts emphasise that they are simply nocturnal birds with no supernatural abilities.
