Congolese Army Recaptures Key Towns from M23 rebels

The Congolese army has announced significant victories against the M23 rebel group as violence escalates in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Over the weekend, the military reported reclaiming control of several strategic towns in North and South Kivu provinces, forcing M23 forces to retreat from South Kivu.

Army spokesperson Guillaume Ndjike Kaiko confirmed these developments, emphasising the military’s commitment to protecting civilians and responding to external threats. “It’s true that we are observing the ceasefire,” Kaiko stated. “But at least, [civilians] should be assured that each time the Rwandan army fires on our positions or on our population or on displaced people, the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo have the right to react.”

The M23 rebel group, predominantly Tutsi in composition, was formed in 2012 in response to what it claims was the Congolese government’s failure to honour a 2009 peace agreement. The group briefly captured Goma, a major city near the Rwandan border, before being pushed out. Although initially subdued, M23 resurfaced in 2013, seizing significant territory in eastern Congo.

The conflict has fuelled tensions between the DRC and Rwanda, with the United Nations accusing Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebels—a claim Rwanda has consistently denied. Rwandan President Paul Kagame has urged both sides to pursue a peaceful resolution while maintaining that Rwanda is not involved in the conflict.

The resurgence of violence has created a worsening humanitarian crisis, with hundreds of thousands of people displaced from their homes. The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the situation, calling for greater efforts to protect civilians and address the dire living conditions in the conflict zones. While denying involvement in the conflict, Rwanda insists that its actions are limited to providing humanitarian assistance.

The Congolese government has pledged to defend its sovereignty and ensure the safety of its citizens. Despite the challenges, the army’s recent successes have been portrayed as a strong response to both internal and external threats. As the conflict persists, international stakeholders are urging all parties to adhere to ceasefire agreements and work toward a long-term resolution to restore peace in the region.
