Deborah Fasoyin Reveals the Origins of Odun Lo Sopin

Deborah Fasoyin, a revered name in Nigerian gospel music and the voice behind the iconic track Odun Lo Sopin, has openly acknowledged that she is not the original composer of the timeless song. In an interview shared by FM 365 and reported by Church Times Nigeria on Thursday, Fasoyin explained that the song existed long before her choir’s famous recording in 1979.

“I must confess to you, till tomorrow, we don’t know the composer of the song. We only added two verses to it,” Fasoyin candidly stated. She revealed that Odun Lo Sopin had its roots in the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), where it was commonly sung during end-of-year revival programs in the 1970s.

“There were many CAC churches in Ibadan. In those days, whenever they had revival programs towards the end of the year, you’d hear people sing the song Odun Lo Sopin (meaning ‘the year is coming to an end’). That chorus belongs to CAC. We only added two verses,” she clarified during the interview, which she delivered in Yoruba.

Fasoyin also emphasised that her choir, the Good Women Choir of CAC, Ibadan, did not create the song but formalised and popularised it through their rendition. “We didn’t go to any mountain to pray to get the song. It was everywhere before we recorded it,” she noted.

Despite her repeated clarifications over the years, many still associate Fasoyin with the composition of the song, largely due to the enduring popularity of her choir’s version. Online commentators have backed her claim, with some recalling that the song was already being sung as far back as 1975.

The song, now a staple at end-of-year gatherings, continues to resonate with Nigerians, evoking prayers for divine guidance and protection. Fasoyin’s honesty about the song’s origins has been widely praised, reinforcing her legacy as a beacon of humility and truth in gospel music.
