Drivers Advised to Drive Carefully in Dry Season
The Directorate of Road Traffic Services has called on drivers to be extra careful as the Harmattan season brings foggy and hazy weather, making driving conditions more dangerous.
Dr. Yusuf Suberu, who leads the Federal Capital Territory squadron at the Vehicle Inspection Office, shared this advice during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja.
He pointed out that the dry season often comes with poor visibility caused by fog and haze, which increases the likelihood of accidents.
Dr. Suberu urged drivers to stay alert and disciplined on the road, emphasising the importance of road safety awareness to prevent accidents during this period.
He pleaded with drivers to avoid overspeeding due to the pressure to gain double their earnings.
“The ember months are notoriously busy on the roads, but both drivers and pedestrians need to prioritise caution to ensure their safety and the security of their belongings.
“Motorists have a responsibility to maintain their vehicles in good working condition, including regular servicing, to prevent accidents.
He added Motorists are advised to stay alert for potential hazards, such as road diversions and obstructions caused by ongoing road construction projects across the country.”
He emphasised the effect of speeding during this season, as it can lead to serious accidents.
He clarified that overloading can impact a vehicle’s performance and undermine the driver’s ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.
The VIO chief urged motorists to comply with traffic rules and regulations as a proactive measure to reduce the risk of accidents during the dry season.
Suberu called on road users to prioritise their safety and that of others by exercising greater caution and adhering to all safety protocols while driving.
“Speeding is a highly hazardous behaviour that contributes to a significant number of road fatalities, resulting in the loss of many lives.
“It is undeniable that the ember months bring increased traffic, leading to greater impatience among motorists and a higher likelihood of disregarding traffic laws.
“Motorists are reminded to exercise patience, keep their vehicles in good condition through regular maintenance, drive within speed limits, avoid overloading, and comply with all traffic rules.
“Together, we can make our roads safer by driving responsibly, being more tolerant, and looking out for one another. A crash-free society is achievable if we all do our part.”.
