D’Tigress Triumph Over Canada, Set New Olympic Milestone

D’tigress becomes the first African team in men’s and women’s basketball to reach the quarterfinals of the Olympics. 

 

The Nigerian female basketball team, D’tigress, qualified for the quarterfinals of the Olympic basketball tournament after defeating Canada 79-70. D’tigress became the first African team in men’s and women’s basketball to reach the quarterfinals of an Olympic event with their second win in the tournament.

D’tigress were defeated in their game against France but came back stronger and more organised against Canada.

Once again, Ezinne Kalu was instrumental in the win. The Nigerian basketball star scored 21 points, and her all-around game was nothing short of incredible. Ezinne Kalu, who scored 19 points in the win over Australia, was simply determined and got the dividends for her determination.

Elizabeth Balogun was also another player with an incredible performance against Canada. Balogun scored 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists—her best performance in a Nigerian shirt. 

The team was incredibly clinical and defensive at the same time. Kudos to coach Rena Wakama; the team played with more concentration and organisation. The defence was simply ruthless, scoring 27 points from turnovers. A defensive performance was remiscent of their display in the win against Australia. D’tigress punished the Canadians for every single mistake they made. 

D’tigress is enjoying their best spell ever in the Olympic tournament.Becoming the first African team to reach the quarterfinals is no small feat. They will be hoping to write more history when they face off against the USA team on August 7.
