EFCC Warns Nigerians Against Fake Land Vendors In Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a strong warning to the general public about the increasing activities of fraudulent land vendors operating within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

This caution follows the arrest of a suspected serial fraudster, Nwobo Williams Chibuike, who allegedly defrauded unsuspecting Nigerians by selling fake plots of land in various parts of Abuja, including Kurudu, Sabon Lugbe East Extension, Kpeyegyi, and Jikoyi Village Extension.

According to a statement released on the EFCC’s official social media handle on X (formerly Twitter), Chibuike posed as the Managing Director of several real estate companies—namely C&C Reality & Construction Limited, Dream-Krest Homes and Properties Limited, and Dan Faith Shelters Limited. Through these entities, he reportedly lured victims with false claims of owning land across multiple locations in the FCT.

Investigations by the anti-graft agency revealed that Chibuike had marketed non-existent plots in areas such as Karsana, Pyakasa, Katampe Extension, Guzape 2, Kurudu, Kuje, and Jikwoyi. The scam involved payments from his victims ranging from ₦3.5 million to ₦60 million, amounting to hundreds of millions of naira.

The EFCC further disclosed that enquiries with the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) confirmed that the advertised plots of land were fictitious and had no government approval or documentation.

In its statement, the Commission reassured the public that the suspect is in custody and will be formally charged in court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.

The EFCC urges Nigerians, particularly Abuja residents and real estate investors, to exercise due diligence before engaging in any land transactions. The public is advised to verify land titles through appropriate authorities and avoid dealings with individuals or companies that cannot provide genuine documentation.

The Commission also called on the media and citizens to help raise awareness about such scams, as real estate fraud continues to rise, particularly in urban centres.
