Federal Government to Pay Five-Month Wage Arrears to Workers

The federal government has announced plans to begin the payment of outstanding five months’ N35,000 wage award arrears to its workforce.

In a statement released in Abuja, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), Bawa Mokwa, confirmed that the wage award, which had earlier been paid in part, would now be settled in monthly installments of N35,000 over five months.

The wage award is part of the federal government’s effort to cushion economic hardship pending the full implementation of a new minimum wage. President Bola Tinubu had approved a new national minimum wage of N70,000 in July 2024, but funding challenges have delayed its rollout for federal workers.

The OAGF clarified that the first tranche of the arrears will be paid immediately after the April 2025 salary, not alongside it.

The office reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fulfilling agreements on staff remuneration and welfare, emphasizing its importance in promoting productivity and operational efficiency across federal institutions.
