Granite Truck Crash Kills One at Eleyele, Many Injured.

A devastating accident at the popular Eleyele bus stop in Ibadan on Wednesday afternoon claimed one life and left numerous others injured when a truck loaded with granite lost control and crashed into a nearby park garage.

Eyewitnesses reported that the truck, travelling from the opposite direction, initially struck a group of roadside traders before ploughing into the garage, where it hit waiting passengers, causing severe injuries. According to reports, the driver lost control of the vehicle due to brake failure, resulting in the tragic incident.

An anonymous witness described the chaotic scene, highlighting the devastation and panic that ensued. In an attempt to avoid being mobbed by onlookers, the truck driver fled the scene, complicating rescue efforts.

Rescue operations are currently underway, with emergency responders working to clear the wreckage and prevent further accidents. Authorities have yet to confirm the total number of casualties as efforts continue to assess the situation and provide medical assistance to the injured.

In a telephone interview, Rosemary Alo, the Oyo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the tragic incident. She expressed her condolences to the victims and their families and stressed the importance of safety measures.

“Roadside traders had previously been warned about the dangers of conducting business in this area. If they had heeded these warnings, the number of casualties could have been significantly reduced,” Alo stated. She further emphasised the need for urgent action, noting that efforts would be intensified in collaboration with the local government chairman to enforce a ban on street trading in the vicinity to prevent future occurrences.

The accident has sparked discussions about road safety and the enforcement of traffic regulations in Ibadan. Emergency responders are focused on restoring normal traffic flow while ensuring that affected individuals receive the necessary care.
