HMPV Preparedness: NCDC Details Proactive Plans

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Nigerians’ health following reports of a rise in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China and other countries.

NCDC Director General Jide Idris disclosed in a statement on Tuesday that the agency is closely collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health to monitor the situation and mitigate potential risks.

“Our commitment to safeguarding the health of all Nigerians remains unwavering,” Idris stated. “We are taking proactive measures to ensure that the public is informed and prepared for any potential impact of HMPV.”

The Director-General confirmed that Nigeria has not recorded any case of HMPV. He noted that the Nigeria Integrated Surveillance System (NISS) has also not reported any respiratory infections linked to HMPV. Idris further dismissed claims that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared HMPV a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), labelling such claims as false.

About HMPV

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus known to cause illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory infections. Vulnerable groups, including young children, older adults, and individuals with compromised immune systems, are most at risk.

There is currently no specific vaccine or antiviral treatment for HMPV, with recovery relying mainly on supportive care.

Recent reports highlight a significant rise in HMPV-related respiratory infections in countries like China, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. The UK Health Security Agency has observed a sharp increase in hospitalizations among children under five and older adults in care homes due to HMPV complications.

Although no cases have been reported in Nigeria, the NCDC has assured the public of its preparedness to act swiftly if the situation changes. It urged Nigerians to cooperate by adhering to health guidelines and reporting any unusual symptoms.

The NCDC emphasised its proactive stance to ensure the country remains ready to address any potential outbreak. Key measures include:

  • Conducting a comprehensive situation analysis.
  • Developing entry implementation protocols for HMPV.
  • Identifying quarantine facilities.
  • Deploying infection prevention and control (IPC) materials to enforce hygiene protocols.

“This proactive approach is essential to ensuring that Nigeria stays ready, even as the global health community confronts the challenges posed by HMPV,” Idris affirmed.

With vigilance and cooperation, NCDC aims to stay ahead of any risks associated with HMPV, prioritising the health and safety of its citizens.
