Hotel Murder: Adedoyin’s Death Sentence Stands
The Court of Appeal sitting in Akure, Ondo State, has upheld the death sentence of Dr. Ramon Adedoyin, who was found guilty in the murder case of Timothy Adegoke, an ex-Master’s student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
In a judgment delivered on Thursday, the appellate court affirmed the decision of the Osun State High Court, which had earlier sentenced Adedoyin to death. The Court of Appeal ruled that the evidence presented by the prosecution was sufficient to convict Adedoyin and that the death sentence was appropriate.
However, the appellate court quashed two aspects of the High Court’s judgment: The order to forfeit the Hilton Hotel, where Adegoke was killed, was overturned by the Court of Appeal. The order requiring Adedoyin and others to provide education scholarships to Adegoke’s children was also set aside.
Timothy Adegoke, a 37-year-old MBA student, was found dead in November 2021 at Adedoyin’s Hilton Honours Hotel in Ile-Ife, where he had lodged. He was buried in his hometown of Eruwa, Oyo State, on January 29, 2022.
The case was investigated by the police, with the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) testifying that some hotel staff had moved Adegoke’s body to a remote location.
Dr. Waheed Oluogun, a consultant pathologist at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, testified that Adegoke’s death was caused by severe haemorrhage resulting from severe traumatic injuries.
Adedoyin appealed his conviction and death sentence to the Court of Appeal. However, the appellate court, after reviewing the evidence and arguments, upheld the original judgment of the High Court.
This judgment brings closure to a case that has garnered significant public attention. It serves as a strong message that those who commit such heinous crimes will be brought to justice.
