Ibadan Stampede: Ex-Ooni’s Wife, Others Free on Bail

An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has granted bail of N10 million each to three defendants standing trial for alleged manslaughter related to a stampede that claimed 35 lives.

The defendants include Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, a broadcaster and CEO of Agidigbo Radio FM, Ibadan; and Abdullahi Fasasi, the principal of Islamic High School. The tragic incident occurred during a Christmas funfair on December 18, 2024, at Islamic High School, Orita Basorun, Ibadan.

The three were initially arraigned on December 24, 2024, before an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court on charges of conspiracy, murder, negligence, and causing harm. Following their arraignment, they were remanded at Agodi Correctional Centre.

Their lawyers later applied for bail at the state High Court. On Monday, Justice Kamorudeen Olawoyin ruled in their favour, granting bail with conditions, including two reliable sureties and a bond of N10 million each.

The judge noted that the magistrate court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the murder charge and stated that holding the defendants in custody violated their constitutional rights. He also emphasised that the stampede was not a deliberate act, making the defendants eligible for bail.

Justice Olawoyin ordered the defendants to submit their international passports and refrain from granting interviews to the media or on social platforms during the trial.
