NAF Denies Civilian Casualties In Zamfara Airstrike
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has denied allegations that its recent airstrike on terrorist hideouts in Tungar Kara, Maradun LGA, Zamfara State, led to civilian casualties, including the deaths of vigilantes and members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard (ZCPG).
Reports claimed that 16 vigilantes lost their lives during the operation targeting the hideout of a notorious criminal leader, Bello Turji. Counter-security expert Zagazola Makama also reported that some ZCPG members were killed in the strike.
NAF spokesperson AVM Akinboyewa dismissed these claims, suggesting they could be terrorist propaganda aimed at undermining military successes. He emphasised that NAF operations are meticulously planned, relying on verified intelligence to minimise harm to civilians. “No civilian casualties have been confirmed at this time, but investigations into the recent operation and reported deaths are ongoing,” Akinboyewa stated.
A NAF statement titled “NAF Conducts Decisive Air Strikes in Zamfara, Investigating Vigilante Casualty Reports” highlighted the successful elimination of bandits and the rescue of kidnap victims. It reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to safeguarding lives and restoring security in Zamfara communities.
Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal commended the NAF’s intensified efforts against banditry but acknowledged the tragic error of misidentifying vigilantes as fleeing bandits. In a statement by his senior special assistant, Sulaiman Idris, the governor expressed condolences to the families of those affected and stressed the importance of prioritising civilian safety during military operations.
Governor Lawal reiterated his support for ongoing military actions, underscoring their critical role in restoring peace and stability in the region.
