NAFDAC Warns Nigerians of Illegal Condoms in Circulation
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised an alarm over the illegal sale and distribution of an unregistered brand of condoms in Nigeria.
The product, identified as Foula Condoms, is packaged in sets of three and has been discovered in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, and Zango, Katsina State. In a statement tagged Public Alert No. 039/2024, NAFDAC disclosed that the product is not registered for use in Nigeria, and its labelling is not in English, raising further concerns about its legitimacy and safety.
NAFDAC emphasised the dangers posed by the use of unregistered condoms, noting that the safety, quality, and efficacy of Foula Condoms cannot be guaranteed. The agency warned:
“The illegal distribution or sale of unregistered condoms poses a risk as the safety, quality, and efficacy of the products are not guaranteed. The purchase and use of poor-quality condoms will adversely affect every aspect of condom promotion for the prevention of unintended pregnancy and protection against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. If condoms leak or break, they cannot offer adequate protection.”
The use of substandard condoms threatens efforts to promote safe sexual practices, particularly campaigns aimed at reducing unintended pregnancies and protecting against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. The agency’s alert underscores the critical importance of using only verified and certified medical products.

NAFDAC has urged healthcare professionals and the general public to report any suspected cases of substandard or falsified medical products, including condoms.

- Visiting the nearest NAFDAC office
- Calling the toll-free line at 0800-162-3322
- Sending an email to sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng
The agency continues to reaffirm its commitment to safeguarding the health of Nigerians by ensuring that only high-quality and safe medical products are available in the market.
Consumers are advised to be vigilant and purchase only NAFDAC-registered products to avoid risks associated with unverified medical items. NAFDAC’s proactive steps serve as a reminder of the need for continuous public awareness about the dangers of counterfeit and substandard products.
