Nigerian Troops Close In on Bandit Leader Bello Turji

Reports confirm that Nigerian troops are making significant progress in their efforts to capture the notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji. The military has recently intensified operations against Turji’s hideouts in northwestern Nigeria, particularly in the states of Zamfara, Sokoto, and Niger.

Bello Turji is known for his violent actions and threats against communities in Zamfara. He had promised to spread terror in 2025, especially after the arrest of one of his close associates, Bako Wurgi. In response, the Nigerian military launched a series of attacks aimed at dismantling his operations.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced that troops successfully killed Aminu Kanawa, Turji’s second-in-command, during a military operation. They also inflicted serious injuries on some of Turji’s close associates, including his younger brother. This development is seen as a major setback for Turji’s group.

In the days leading up to this announcement, the military reported that they had killed several of Turji’s fighters and even his son during operations on his hideouts. The military mocked Turji for abandoning his son and fighters during the battles, showing that the pressure was mounting on him.

The DHQ has made it clear that their goal is to either capture or kill Turji in 2025. They are determined to stop his repeated taunts and challenges to the military, especially after the arrest of his associate, Bako Wurgi, in December 2024. In a statement, the military reaffirmed its commitment to this mission, despite the recent surrender of two other terrorist leaders in the region.

Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, the outgoing Director of Defence Media Operations, provided an update on the situation in northwestern Nigeria. He stated that during military actions from January 20 to 21, troops killed over seven key commanders of Turji’s group along with more than 24 militants who were trying to flee from their hideouts.

Among those killed were individuals known as Abu Dan Shehu, Jabbi Dogo, and Dan Kane, who were all influential figures in Turji’s network. This operation has been significant in reducing the capabilities of Turji’s group, which has been involved in numerous kidnappings and attacks across the region.

The news of these military successes has brought relief to many residents in Sokoto State. For years, communities have suffered under the terror of bandits like Turji. Residents expressed their gratitude to the military for their efforts and hope for a future free from the fear that Turji and his gang have instilled in their lives.

Mallam Nuhu Bello, a local motorcycle operator, shared his experiences of fleeing his farming community due to the bandits’ threats. He welcomed the military’s actions, believing it would lead to safer conditions for the people of Sokoto and Zamfara.

However, the Sokoto State Government has advised residents to remain vigilant as military operations continue. They have warned that some bandits may attempt to hide in villages or seek medical help disguised as locals. The government has urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to authorities to support ongoing efforts to restore peace.

The military’s determined actions against Turji and his gang mark a crucial step in establishing security in northwestern Nigeria. The commitment to eliminate the threat posed by these terrorists is essential in creating a safer environment for all citizens in the region.
