Nigeria’s U-19 Women’s Cricket Team Eyes World Cup Glory

Nigeria’s women’s U-19 to face Rwanda In ICC Women’s T20 U-19 World Cup Africa Qualifier (Division 1)

Nigeria’s women’s U-19 cricket team, the Junior Female Yellow Greens, will take on their East African rival, Rwanda, in one of the semi-finals of the 2025 ICC Women’s T20 U-19 World Cup Africa Qualifier (Division 1) this Saturday.

After securing qualification with a game to spare on Monday, the Junior Female Yellow Greens solidified their position at the top of Group B in Division 1 on Wednesday with a dominant 86-run victory over Malawi. This win set up a semi-final clash against Uganda/Rwanda, who finished as runners-up in Group A.

Nigeria comfortably defeated Malawi at the Gahanga 2 Oval, with captain Lucky Piety winning the toss for the first time in the tournament and choosing to bat. The decision paid off, as Nigeria posted 147 runs for the loss of four wickets in the first innings.

Malawi had their highlights in the bowling department, managing to run out, catch, and bowl out four of Nigeria’s six batters during the match.

However, their pursuit in the second innings was challenging, as Nigeria restricted them to just 61 runs, dismissing all 10 wickets in 18.1 overs.

Captain Piety, Peace Usen, and Kehinde Amusa each took two wickets during the match.

Nigeria’s semi-final opponent, either Uganda or Rwanda, has performed well in the tournament, securing a spot in the last four by winning their first two matches with a game to spare.

However, Rwanda secured second place in their group despite a 46-run defeat against Uganda, who topped the table alongside another team in their final group match.

Zimbabwe, finishing second to Nigeria, will face Uganda in the second semi-final.

The winner of the qualifying tournament will secure Africa’s second spot at the World Cup in Malaysia, following South Africa’s qualification as one of the top finishers in the previous World Cup.
