NIS Arrests 40 Illegal Migrants in Oyo State

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has apprehended 40 illegal migrants at various locations within the Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State. The arrests were carried out following credible intelligence, leading to the discovery of unauthorised foreigners residing in the area.

A detailed profiling of the arrested individuals revealed their nationalities: 27 Cameroonians, 10 Beninese, 2 Ghanaians, and 1 Togolese.

Among the detained migrants, eight are female and 32 are male, all aged between 18 and 35. Investigations further disclosed that 10 of them identified as farmers, while 30 claimed to be engaged in online marketing.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Oyo State Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Tayo Dada, none of the arrested individuals possessed residence cards or valid travel documents.

Dada stated, “Following credible intelligence, 40 illegal migrants were arrested at their hideouts in different locations within the Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State. Their profiling revealed that 27 are Cameroonians, two are Ghanaians, 10 are Beninese, and one is a Togolese. Of the 40 arrested, eight are female and 32 are male, all between the ages of 18 and 35. While 10 of them are farmers, 30 others claim to be involved in online marketing.”

Further investigations confirmed that all 40 individuals had entered Nigeria through unauthorized routes, lacking any legal immigration documents.

Following the arrests, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, has directed that necessary procedures be followed to repatriate the foreigners to their respective countries.

The Nigerian government has been intensifying its efforts to curb irregular migration and enhance national security. Earlier in January, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed that the Federal Government had deported 828 illegal immigrants in 2024 as part of its ongoing efforts to regulate migration and uphold security within the nation.

The recent arrests in Oyo State further highlight the government’s commitment to tackling illegal immigration and ensuring that only those with legal documentation reside within the country.
