OYO YOUTHS PROTEST OVER THE STATE OF ECONOMY

Oyo youth residents trooped out in their numbers to stage a protest against the government over the poor state of the economy in the early hours of February 19, 2024. These citizens are bitter about the recent development in the Nigerian economy. In recent months since the election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian economy has worsened.

Among the numerous complaints of the youth is that the removal of the subsidy has led to an increase in oil product prices, making it almost unaffordable for the average Nigerian. Food item prices increase daily, and basic amenities are becoming unaffordable for middle-class and lower-class Nigerians.

At this moment in Ibadan, the protest is still ongoing, and the number of participants is increasing. These young citizens are blaming the state of the economy on government policies that have been unfavourable to them.

They feel these policies have further reduced the state of their livelihood. Some citizens believe President Tinubu’s government hasn’t kept its word, and the numerous promises made to them during the president’s campaign do not look like they will be fulfilled.

This protest follows a series of peaceful protests in Niger, Osun, Sokoto, Ogun, Lagos, and Kogi states in recent months. The protesters have promised to keep the protests going until the government addresses their concerns.
