Pardoned Ex-Convict Rearrested For Theft In Osun

On December 24, 2024, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke pardoned to several ex-convicts, aiming to reintegrate them into society. However, just eight days after his release, one of the beneficiaries, Sunday Omisakin, was rearrested for allegedly stealing a plasma television.

Omisakin, listed as number eight on the pardon list, reportedly committed the crime on January 3, 2025, by breaking into a residence in the Iludun area of Osogbo. According to court documents, he stole a plasma TV valued at ₦600,000 belonging to one Shittu Damilare.

The charges filed against Omisakin by the Osogbo Chief Magistrates Court are as follows:

Count I: “That you, Adebayo Omisakin Sunday, on January 3, 2025, at about noon, at the Al-Medinat Area, Iludun in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did break the house of one Shittu Damilare and steal one plasma TV valued at ₦600,000.”

Count II: “That you, Adebayo Omisakin Sunday, on the same date, time, and place, did steal one plasma TV valued at ₦600,000, the property of one Shittu Damilare.”

These offences are said to contravene Section 411(1)(2) and Section 383 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II, Laws of Osun State, 2002, and are punishable under Section 390(9) of the same code.

During Omisakin’s arraignment on January 7, he applied for bail. However, the presiding magistrate, A. Adeyeba, deferred ruling on the application until January 10. In the interim, the prosecutor, Kayode Adeoye, requested that Omisakin be remanded in the Ilesa Correctional Centre, a request the court upheld.

This incident raises questions about the criteria used to grant state pardons and the support systems available for ex-convicts post-release. While Governor Adeleke’s initiative was likely well-intentioned, the swift return to crime by one of the pardoned individuals highlights potential gaps in the rehabilitation process.

As the case continues, it serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between offering second chances and maintaining public safety.
