Pastor Chris Oyakhilome: Music Industry Exploits The Church

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, the founder of Christ Embassy, has voiced concerns about the music industry’s treatment of the church. In a sermon, Pastor Chris accused the music industry of consistently taking advantage of the talents nurtured by the church, who later abandoned their religious roots for secular success.

The comments surfaced recently in a widely circulated video of the pastor preaching. The statement was made during a church service. Pastor Chris argues that for the last 50 years, the music industry has taken advantage of the church by offering opportunities to up-and-coming artists. According to him, these artists often start within the church but eventually transition to secular music careers, which he believes exploits the church’s support and resources.

He alleged that many mainstream artists began their journeys in church choirs but later adopted values and influences contrary to their Christian upbringing.

He further warned that some musicians return with negative influences, using their newfound fame to sway others away from the church.

“For decades, the music industry has continuously exploited the church. Many artists start in church choirs, using the platform for exposure before departing to chase secular success. Once outside, they adopt worldly influences and sometimes return to draw others away,” he stated.

In response to this trend, Pastor Chris urged church leaders to be cautious about how they engage musicians in their ministries. He advised that talented singers should also be involved in other aspects of church service to ensure their commitment to their faith.

“Pastors, don’t entrust this vital part of the ministry to individuals whose only interest is personal gain. Let them be active in other church responsibilities to prove their dedication,” he advised.

Pastor Chris’ remarks come amid ongoing discussions about the relationship between gospel artists and the church. Recently, Pastor Femi Lazarus also criticised gospel artists for charging performance fees to sing in churches, sparking debates about the commercialisation of gospel music.

Christ Embassy, under Pastor Chris’ leadership, has played a pivotal role in the success of several gospel artists, including Sinach, one of Africa’s most renowned gospel musicians.

The discussion raises broader questions about the balance between faith and professional aspirations within the gospel music industry.
