Pope Francis Discharged After Five Weeks In Hospital

Pope Francis Makes First Public Appearance After Hospitalization

After more than five weeks in the hospital, Pope Francis has made his first public appearance, waving from a balcony at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital before being discharged shortly after. The 88-year-old pontiff had been admitted on February 14 due to a severe respiratory infection, marking one of the most critical health challenges of his 12-year papacy.

Medical experts overseeing his treatment have stated that while his condition has improved, his recovery process remains ongoing. On Saturday, doctors emphasized that the Pope would require an additional two months of rest at the Vatican and should avoid large gatherings or excessive exertion.

Before heading back to the Vatican, Pope Francis made an unexpected stop at St. Mary Major Basilica, a place of deep spiritual significance for him. Although he remained in his vehicle, he handed a bouquet of flowers to a cardinal, who placed them before an iconic image of the Madonna.

As he traveled in the front passenger seat of his motorcade, observers noted that he was wearing oxygen nasal tubes, underscoring the fragility of his health. His recent hospitalization ranks as the second-longest for a sitting Pope in modern history, sparking widespread concern among the faithful.

During his time at the hospital, hundreds of well-wishers gathered outside both the Vatican and the medical facility, offering prayers for his swift recovery. As he now focuses on rehabilitation and regaining his strength, many around the world continue to pray for his full restoration to health.
