Pope Francis hospitalised for 4 days with an infection.
Pope Francis is in the hospital for a fourth day due to a respiratory tract infection, with the Vatican confirming his condition is stable. According to the Italian news agency ANSA, the 88-year-old pontiff had a peaceful night on Sunday. However, the Vatican has not released an update on his condition.
He has been battling bronchitis for over a week and was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Friday morning. His doctors have advised complete rest, preventing him from delivering his regular Sunday prayer to pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square or leading a special mass for artists as part of the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year celebrations.
The Vatican reiterated on Sunday that his condition remained “stable” and that his treatment was ongoing, adding that he would stay in the hospital for as long as necessary.
Despite his hospitalisation, Francis continued his recent practice of making phone calls to members of a Catholic parish in Gaza over the weekend, Italian broadcaster Mediaset reported on Monday. A parish member said the pope had called on both Friday and Saturday, describing him as being in “good humour” but sounding “a bit tired.”
The Vatican has also announced the cancellation of the pope’s planned visit to Rome’s famed Cinecittà film studios, which was scheduled for Monday.
Expressing gratitude for the support he has received, Francis wrote on X on Sunday, “Thank you for the affection, prayer, and closeness with which you accompany me in these days.”
