Reps Give ₦18m To Support Enugu Tanker Explosion Survivors
The House of Representatives has donated a cheque of ₦18 million to the Enugu State Government to support victims of the tragic petrol “Enugu tanker” explosion that occurred on January 25, 2025, at Ugwu Onyeama, along the Enugu-Onitsha Motorway. The incident, which claimed several lives and caused significant damage, drew national concern and prompted immediate responses from both state and federal levels.
The cheque was presented on Tuesday by members of the Enugu State Caucus in the House of Representatives, led by Rep. Nnolim Nnaji. Other members of the delegation included Reps. Martins Oke, Dennis Agbo, Mark Obetta, Anayo Onwuegbu, and Chimaobi Atu. They delivered the donation on behalf of the Speaker of the House, Rt Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, who was unable to attend in person.
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, through his representatives, described the incident as a great loss not only to the people of Enugu State but to the nation as a whole. He reaffirmed the House’s commitment to standing with citizens during moments of national grief and tragedy.
The explosion was caused by a petrol tanker that lost control and ignited at the Ugwu Onyeama hill, a notorious accident-prone area along the Enugu-Onitsha Motorway. The fire resulted in multiple fatalities, left many injured, and damaged surrounding properties.
As part of their tradition of showing solidarity in times of disaster, the House of Representatives provided financial support to assist with ongoing relief efforts and help affected families recover from the traumatic event.
The tanker explosion occurred on January 25, 2025, while the House’s relief donation was officially presented on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. The two-month gap allowed time for assessments and coordination between the federal and state governments.

The tragic accident took place at Ugwu Onyeama, a hill along the Enugu-Onitsha Motorway, a key highway linking the southeastern part of Nigeria to other regions. Known for its sharp curves and high accident rate, Ugwu Onyeama has been the scene of multiple road tragedies over the years, sparking calls for urgent infrastructural intervention.
According to Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, the donation is in line with the House of Representatives’ principle of responsive and compassionate leadership. He stated that the House will continue to stand with Nigerians during disasters and ensure that governments and citizens are not left to face such tragedies alone.
Speaking during the presentation, Rep. Nnolim Nnaji conveyed the speaker’s condolences:
“On behalf of the Speaker, we commiserate with the government and people of Enugu State. We understand the pain and the loss, and this ₦18 million is a token of our support in helping victims recover.”
How Will the Funds Be Used?
Governor Peter Mbah, who received the cheque, expressed profound appreciation for the gesture. He acknowledged the speaker’s earlier call of solidarity and praised the House for backing words with action.
“This cheque will go a long way in cushioning the effect of the Ugwu Onyeama incident,” said Governor Mbah. “We assure you that these funds will be used transparently, accountably, and justly to support those directly affected.”
The Enugu State Government has pledged to allocate the funds toward medical bills, trauma counselling, rehabilitation of survivors, and other community support initiatives.
Rep. Akin Rotimi, spokesperson of the House, emphasised that the donation reflects the 10th National Assembly’s commitment to people-first policies.
“This is not just a symbolic act,” he said. “It shows our dedication to human welfare and the well-being of citizens, no matter the region or circumstance.”
