Sokoto Bombing: Military Blames Terrorist Sympathizers

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has warned civilians not to shelter or assist criminals, including terrorists and bandits, as doing so puts their communities at risk. He issued this warning while addressing troops at Operation FASAN YANMA headquarters in Sokoto.

This statement comes after a tragic incident in the Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State, where a Nigerian Air Force airstrike targeting Lakurawa terrorists mistakenly hit two villages, Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa. The strike killed at least 10 villagers and left many others injured.

General Musa expressed sadness over the loss of innocent lives but stated that communities harbouring criminals could unintentionally become targets during military operations. He said, “Anyone sheltering criminals makes themselves a legitimate target. The military will not tolerate this. Do not live with them, do not support them, and do not stay near them to avoid becoming targets.”
He explained that the military conducted the operation carefully, with detailed intelligence and video evidence of the event. However, he promised a full investigation into the mistake to ensure such incidents don’t happen again. He also urged the media not to give unnecessary attention to bandits or terrorists, as it could encourage their activities.

In response to the incident, the Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, visited the affected villages to console the victims’ families and assess the damage. He described the incident as heartbreaking and announced a donation of ₦20 million and 100 bags of food items to assist the families. He assured them that the state government would collaborate with the military to prevent such accidents in the future.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the airstrike, calling it devastating and unjustifiable. He emphasised the need for accurate intelligence to avoid harming innocent people during operations. Similarly, ex-Governor Aminu Tambuwal expressed shock and sympathy, urging the government to conduct a thorough investigation and take measures to prevent similar tragedies.

General Musa reassured troops during his visit that the military remains committed to protecting Nigeria and addressing all security threats. He praised their dedication and noted the success of recent operations that dismantled terrorist camps in Sokoto and Kebbi States. Furthemore he encouraged them to stay motivated and prepare for more challenges in the coming year, promising continued support and resources to aid their work.

He also called on neighbouring countries like Niger, Chad, and Benin to cooperate with Nigeria in fighting terrorism. He stressed that no foreign military base would be allowed in Nigeria, as the country is determined to handle its security issues independently.

The CDS later visited a military hospital to check on injured troops, commending their bravery and sacrifice. Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the airstrike casualties, stating that over 10 villagers were killed when the bomb, intended for terrorists, mistakenly hit the two communities.

Governor Aliyu visited the affected areas and assured the public that he was in contact with military officials to ensure a thorough investigation and to provide support for the victims. He promised that the state government would work to prevent such incidents and improve the safety of all residents.

This tragic event has raised concerns about civilian safety during military operations. Leaders across Nigeria have called for accountability and better strategies to ensure terrorists are neutralised without harming innocent people. The government and military are now under pressure to refine their operations and avoid further losses of innocent lives.
