Sokoto’s Jarma UK Academy Hit By Devastating Fire

A fire outbreak on Thursday evening devastated Jarma UK Academy in Sokoto, reducing the students’ hostels and several offices to ashes. The fire, whose cause remains unknown, destroyed the students’ hostels, the offices of the principal and vice principal, a computer laboratory, and a staff room located on the upper floor of the school. Items such as mattresses, blankets, clothing materials, and other personal belongings of students were also lost in the blaze.

Following the incident, a delegation from the Sokoto State government visited the school to assess the damage. The team, led by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Muhammad Bello Sifawa, included the Chief of Staff at Government House Sokoto, Aminu Haliru Dikko, and the State Attorney-General, Nasiru Mohammed Binji.

Speaking at the scene, SSG Muhammad Bello Sifawa, on behalf of the state government, expressed sympathy for the management of the academy. However, he expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah that no lives were lost and that no student sustained injuries

He said, “Jarma UK Academy was established by a philanthropist, Alhaji Ummarun Kwabo, Jarman Sokoto, in 2018, with 176 students, mostly orphans displaced by Boko Haram insurgency in Borno and Yobe States. The Academy offers Western education side-by-side with Islamic education as well as entrepreneurial skills to its students to make them productive members of society.”

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire but so far there hasn’t been any indication of arson as the cause.
