Thailand Passes Same-Sex Marriage Law in Historic Vote.
Thailand has become the first country in Southeast Asia to legalise same-sex marriage, following a historic parliamentary vote. On June 18, 2024, the upper house Senate approved the legislation with 130 votes in favour, four against, and 18 abstentions. After years of campaigning by LGBTQ rights activists, the decision to legalise same-sex marriage in Thailand reflects the slow but positive shift in attitudes towards LGBTQ rights in parts of Asia, including Taiwan and Nepal.
The LGBTQ community in Thailand has long enjoyed popular support and tolerance, and it is hoped that other countries will follow Thailand’s lead in accepting and protecting LGBTQ rights. In addition, the approval of same-sex marriage has sparked widespread celebration among supporters and activists. Many expressed their joy that the long-awaited day had finally arrived and emphasised that everyone, regardless of gender, should enjoy equal rights. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, a strong supporter of the LGBTQ community and the bill, opened his official residence to activists and supporters for the celebrations. In central Bangkok, activists marked the occasion by decorating the grounds of the Bangkok Arts and Culture Centre with a giant rainbow flag.

The new law stipulates that couples can marry regardless of their gender and will enjoy the same rights and benefits as opposite-sex couples. Same-sex weddings are expected to begin as early as October. In conclusion, while Thailand retains its traditional and conservative values, the new legislation represents a significant step forward for LGBTQ rights in the country. The law will come into effect 120 days after its publication, marking a historic milestone for Thailand and providing a hopeful precedent for LGBTQ rights in Asia.
