Universities to Get Solar Panels, Says Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to install solar panels in universities nationwide to reduce the financial strain caused by high electricity tariffs on public higher institutions. This statement was made during the 55th convocation ceremony of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) in Akoka, Yaba, where Tinubu was represented by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.
Tinubu emphasised his administration’s unwavering dedication to the education sector, underscoring its critical role in national development. “My administration recognises that education is the cornerstone of national development. It is the bedrock upon which a prosperous society is built. This understanding is reflected in our policies and investments in the education sector,” he said.
The announcement comes as universities, including UNILAG, grapple with skyrocketing electricity bills. Tinubu acknowledged these challenges and outlined the solar panel initiative as a sustainable solution to ease the financial burden on higher institutions.
The administration’s support for education is further demonstrated in the proposed 2025 budget, which allocates ₦3.52 trillion to the sector, making it the third-largest allocation. Tinubu remarked, “This ‘Budget of Restoration: Securing Peace, Rebuilding Prosperity’ reflects our determination to stabilise the economy, improve lives, and position Nigeria for a brighter future.”

In addition to the solar panel initiative, Tinubu highlighted the success of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which has expanded access to higher education for students facing financial challenges. “Thousands of students have already benefitted, and we remain committed to expanding this program to benefit thousands more,” he noted.
To ensure long-term sustainability and improvement in tertiary education, the administration is also implementing reforms to address systemic challenges. These reforms aim to create a robust, efficient, and accessible educational system for future generations.
These initiatives underscore the administration’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and positioning Nigeria’s education system for a brighter future.
