Vatican: Pope Francis Remains in Critical Condition
Pope Francis remains hospitalised at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital more than a week after being admitted due to severe respiratory and kidney complications. The Vatican has stated that while his condition is critical, he is resting and has been in good spirits. According to an update on Monday morning, the Pope slept well overnight and continues to eat normally, which is a positive sign given concerns about his health.
The 88-year-old pontiff was taken to the hospital on February 14, 2025, after experiencing ongoing breathing difficulties. Initially, he was treated for bronchitis, but further medical examinations confirmed he had pneumonia in both lungs. His condition worsened on Saturday when he suffered a respiratory crisis, prompting increased concern from the Vatican. However, by Sunday, officials reported that he had not experienced any further respiratory distress.
In addition to pneumonia, Pope Francis is dealing with thrombocytopenia, a condition characterised by low platelet levels in the blood, which doctors say remains stable. He is also receiving treatment for early-stage kidney problems. The Vatican has refrained from providing a prognosis due to the complexity of his medical situation.
Throughout his tenure as the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis has faced several health challenges. As a young man, he suffered from pleurisy, an inflammatory lung condition, which led to partial lung removal. These past health issues make him more vulnerable to severe respiratory infections like pneumonia.

Recognising the seriousness of the situation, the Catholic Church has called for prayers for the Pope’s recovery. Cardinals, clergy, and members of the Vatican community are gathering each evening outside St. Peter’s Basilica to recite the Rosary, with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, leading Monday’s prayer session.
As the first Latin American and Jesuit pope, Francis has led the Church for over a decade. His ongoing health struggles have raised concerns about his ability to continue in his role, but for now, he remains under medical supervision as the world watches and prays for his recovery.
