World Happiness 2025: Finland No.1, Nigeria Falls to 105
The World Happiness Report 2025, has ranked Finland as the happiest country in the world for the eighth year in a row. Other Nordic nations, including Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden, also maintained their top positions in the same order.
The report, released on Thursday by the Global Happiness Council, evaluates happiness levels based on individuals’ assessments of their lives.
Nigeria ranked 105th out of 147 countries in the latest report, marking a drop from its 2024 position of 102. Despite this decline, Nigeria has climbed to become the 10th happiest country in Africa.
Libya emerged as Africa’s highest-ranked country, securing the 79th position. The report highlights that Libya continues to surpass its neighbours in life satisfaction and societal well-being, despite facing ongoing challenges.
The United States, which fell out of the top 20 for the first time last year, now ranks 24th. The country had once reached its highest ranking at 11th place in 2012. The decline in happiness is not limited to the US, as the United Kingdom has also dropped to 23rd place, recording its lowest average life satisfaction score since 2017.
Published by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network in collaboration with Gallup and the Oxford Centre for Well-Being Research, the World Happiness Report evaluates happiness levels across populations. It considers six key factors: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and perceptions of corruption.
This year’s edition focuses on “the impact of caring and sharing on people’s happiness” and examines how happiness varies across different populations, highlighting significant differences both within and between nations.
